* Self sufficient: A survivalist and a woodsman you could drop Andre naked anywhere temperate and he'd thrive, either walk out or have a decent home built without any worries.
* Cold eyed Killer: Andre has been killing things and people for a long time, he's good at it.. perhaps a little too good.
* Hard as Nails: Andre has real grit in spades, courtesy of a life earning it.
* Temper: Andre's temper is ferocious, and a bit too close to the surface.
* Rough: Too much time in the woods and away from better society has left Andre's manners noticeably rough, and his education somewhat lacking.
*Honest: Perhaps too much so at times, Andre has little use for liars or people being excessively polite. He talks straight and prefers others do too.
*Confident: Andre is aware of how good he is at what he does and not prone to doubting himself.
Alternately grim, gruff or abrasive with strangers Andre is actually remarkably warm and companionable among those he gets on with. He has very little time for airs or graces, even less time for foppery and frippery, valuing straight forward talk and action over even politeness and tact.
He is honest, forthright and confident, capable and intuitive but this is balanced by his decidedly rough edges and his not inconsiderable temper.
Deep down Andre is a violent man, a little too ready to use that to solve his problems, this is something his friends and colleagues have to learn to deal with and account for as he has so far proven incapable of changing that.
Andre's father was a Wyzkowish Knight, who dallied with a Bordelean lady in waiting and didn't do a lot to acknowledge the fat afterwards. He is assumed to have died at Blackfen, Andre has not asked.
Luckily for his mother the young Eleanor Dubois's mother took pity and took her in; gave Constance a place in her household despite the glares that earned, and let Constance raise her healthy, bastard boy in relative security.
Life wasn't exactly easy for the bastard, especially as he was a little too surly and prone to fighting with those about him, especially in 'defence' of his mother (who continued to have a fondness for visiting knights), but he was at least well fed and given a basic education.
His favourite place to dodge said education was with the gameskeeper, a former legionaire retired to manage the Dubois estate, and young Andre got into a lot of trouble for being in the woods when he should have been learning his lessons.
As he grew up that was where he set his sights, formally petitioning the family that took him in for one more favour and a start in the Legion as soon as he was old enough to go.
They were generous again and the young cornet pulled on a green jacket the very day of his fifteenth birthday, and by sixteen was already headed for the new world by way of the Archipelago.
His mother maybe got a letter a year from him thereafter, more information coming back to her by letters Eleanore had arranged for the company clerk to send. there were some rough patches, where he got a touch of the jungle fever, where he took an arrow to the .. gut.. and so forth; but in general the boy excelled.. mostly.
He became an excellent soldier, but his birth and his temper made him a less welcome part of the officer's mess. That led to him spending even more time in the woods, ranging and scouting with the troops rather than hanging around the barracks.. and everyone but his mother was happy about that.
He learned the local language of the friendlier tribes, picked up some of their crafting skills, and helped exterminate them when they turned less friendly under the pressure of the expanding colony.
Twice he was commended for valorous deeds, each time carrying injuries of his own to rescue or recover a comrade from near certain death. Both of those achieved with a fellow legionaire by the name of Hawke; the second time also including a young lady in the rescue... who was considerably grateful.
In the end though his clashes with the officer class meant that his career was doomed, despite the hint of patronage from the woman who was now her Majesty. six months ago, under pressure from a new commanding officer whose face he had once rearranged years before, Andre resigned his post and returned to Bordeaux.
His first stop was the grave his mother was buried in, his second was the palace at Paragon, where the Queen herself met him and asked a favour he never would have refused, to look up one of her people and learn some from her in preparation for a personal mission.
Andre turned up at Floridiah's cottage shortly later in his best green jacket....
And left her company some time later, and a few shirts less...
Now he has been given the expected task from her Royal majesty and is off into the world to look for the princess he personally knew just before her disappearance, the same quest that left the Queen a widow.
