Truthfully Gabriel is unsure of who he is anymore. As a child he wanted to be a famed adventure or monster hunter, but then his parents were murdered and he became a monster himself. Gabriel has done a lot of horrible things in his life, things he is no longer proud of, and knows that he is no better than those who took his parents away from him. Since killing his former friends, and mentor, he is unsure of who he has become or what his purpose in life is. He yearns to find a place in the world, but doesn’t know how or if he can anymore after what he has done.
Gabriel was born to a minor noble family in Bordeaux who’s only real notoriety came from their skills as diplomats for the crown. It was this reason that Gabriel’s family would end up murdered. His father had been tasked as the leader of a diplomatic envoy to Yoshima for the Royal Family to discuss more trade options with the various shoguns. Initial meetings had been going well, but a samurai under the service of one of the country’s shoguns did not like how the country was willing to meet and trade with outsiders and killed his parents during a trade meeting.
While that samurai was sentenced to death for his actions and an apology sent to the royal family for what had happened, Gabriel was ignored and left to his own devices. He was an outsider, a foreigner child, and of no concern or importance to the shogun. The shogun himself had even reported that the eight year old Gabriel himself had also been killed in the attack.
For two years Gabriel wandered the streets of Tokugawa doing what he could to survive. It was not easy and had been a brutal rite of passage for the young boy who had done nothing wrong. It wasn’t until he had tried to steal food from the man who would become his mentor that things would change for the young noble from Bordeaux.
Hiro Tenakawa had taken Gabriel under his wing, impressed with how he had been able to survive on his own for so long, and began to train him as an assassin for the Chinmoku no shi: The Silent Death. Gabriel was trained in a wide assortment of martial and espionage disciplines until he was finally sent out on his first mission at the age of nineteen.
The small assassin’s guild had been hired to kill a disgraced shogun and it was to be Gabriel to make the kill. Gabriel was nervous and apprehensive until he seen that the target was the very shogun who had left him to die on the streets instead of sending him home. Whatever nervousness Gabriel had felt had turned to rage and he gleefully killed the shogun by slitting his throat. It was his first kill and he enjoyed it.
Over the next decade he had taken all manner of jobs that came his way and delighted in killing those he was hired to. Torture, maiming, taunting, and other cruel acts were all second nature Gabriel. He had truly become a monster with no real semblance of humanity left in him. Or so he had believed anyway.
The guild travelled between Yoshima, Jade Empire, and Great Middle Wilds for work on a regular basis and it was while they were in Shanlun of the Wilds that everything changed. The Chinmoku no shi had been hired to kill an entire family that threatened their client’s businesses in the area. Gabriel believed that this would be a simple job, but he was wrong. When the assassins arrived at the homestead they were met only by the matriarch of the family and their four children. Never before had Gabriel killed children, but had believed it would be no harder than killing anyone else. He was wrong.
There was something in the eyes of the youngest son that spoke to Gabriel as the boy looked down the edge of his blade. He couldn’t explain it and his stomach had twisted in knots as he had broken out into a cold sweat. Knowing that he could not bring himself to do it, he tried to reason with his fellow assassins that they had only needed to kill the patriarch and state that the woman and children had managed to flee from them. This was not good enough for his friends, his family, and a confrontation ensued.
In the end Gabriel had killed his fellow assassins, including his mentor, in a fight that still haunts his dreams. He had killed the men he considered family and was once again alone, but more than that he had finally seen the monster he had become. That boy had awakened something within him that he could not explain, nor did he really want to at the time. He left the family to live the rest of their lives and ended up killing the man who had hired them in first place to close that loose end.
Gabriel now travels wherever his whim takes him in what he feels to be a futile effort to rediscover who he is and where he belongs in the world. He will take odd jobs here and there, but refuses to kill for money. He has killed men since that day, and still enjoys it to his dismay, but never with the premeditated intent of doing so.
